The Prakti BBQ is extraordinary in several respects:

  • It can be used as a barbecue with its cooking grate
  • It can be used as a charcoal stove for cooking with a frying pan, pot, or saucepan
  • Economical, it consumes very little charcoal
  • Ecological, it produces very little smoke
  • Super compact, you will want to use it and take it everywhere

Size: 26 x 26 x 21 cm / Weight: 3.59 kg

Prakti designed this stove to be economical, helping families in India save on fuel and avoid pollution caused by cooking smoke. Reducing smoke inhalation for families, CO2 emissions in the air, fuel savings that reduce the cost of meals for residents, and reducing deforestation have allowed Prakti to win international awards thanks to all these innovations. For the same reasons, the Prakti program is now being developed in Haiti, Sudan, Congo, Nepal, and Bangladesh.

"Our mission is to save lives, empower women, reduce poverty, and preserve the environment by developing and scaling the adoption of clean and efficient cookstoves that families want."

Prakti Design is a social enterprise founded in 2008 in Pondicherry, India. A recognized technical leader in the design of biomass cookstoves, Prakti Design has won several awards, including the Partnership for Clean Indoor Air (2009), the Global Social Venture Competition (2011), the IDEA Award (2012), and the Convergences Forum (2015). The expertise of Mouhsine Serrar, founder of Prakti, in the field of biomass stove design is widely recognized; he was co-chair of the Technology and Fuels working group of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves.

Mouhsine Serrar received the Clinton Global Initiative award from the former U.S. president, a prize designed to honor "visionary" individuals committed to solving global challenges.

About half of the world's population, or three billion people across the planet, use open fires or traditional biomass stoves for cooking and/or heating. These households, primarily women and young children, are exposed to harmful indoor air pollution.

This is the fourth leading cause of mortality worldwide and the second leading cause of death in developing countries, behind AIDS but ahead of well-known diseases such as malaria or tuberculosis. The use of these stoves also has an impact on the environment, through unsustainable logging and biomass exploitation, as well as on livelihoods. In Haiti, 97% of the island is deforested and more than 70% of the population depends on biomass (charcoal and firewood) for cooking.

Prakti Design, a developer of clean cookstoves, aims to solve this social problem with an integrated strategy ranging from the design, to the manufacturing, and distribution of highly efficient and affordable biomass stoves, with a 40 to 80% reduction in fuel consumption, and a 60 to 100% decrease in emissions (carbon monoxide and particulate matter). By using a state-of-the-art stove design supported by participatory field testing with end-users and a unique partnership with a stove manufacturer, Prakti has developed stoves that meet the specific needs of Haitian cooking, with the fastest and cleanest cooking time and fuel consumption among existing options. Prakti's unique social business model is to sustainably scale the dissemination of energy-efficient and non-polluting biomass stoves among the poorest populations. (source: Field Actions Science Reports The journal of field actions Vol. 7 | 2014)
