Yukio Yamai founded Snow Peak in 1958, referencing Mount Tanigawa, a Japanese mountain famous for its beauty, but also for its danger and the many failures of mountaineers attempting to reach its glorious summit.
Based on his personal experiences (he reached the summit himself several times), he created innovative mountaineering equipment, utilizing the expertise of renowned Sanjo craftsmen specializing in metalwork (the city where our tools and some Niwaki knives are produced).
In the 1970s, his son Tohru decided to expand the brand's offerings to camping and the outdoor lifestyle.
His feeling of frustration and disconnection while in the city would disappear when spending time in nature—a sort of healing, restorative, and revitalizing experience.
Today, Snow Peak’s mission remains the same: to offer and create restorative outdoor experiences to alleviate the stress of modern life and reconnect with the rhythms of the natural world.
