Shetland wool: The small Shetland sheep, extremely hardy, is adapted to the extreme weather conditions of the Scottish islands. Its wool is therefore ultra-robust, exceptionally warm, and one of the most insulating wools in the world.
The finish: The English word "shaggy" means "dishevelled, bushy." To remove the initially rough texture of Shetland wool, the sweater undergoes an intensive brushing process that brings the short fibers of the yarn to the surface of the knit. The result: the sweater becomes voluminous, soft to the touch, and has a fluffy, slightly fuzzy look, making it very pleasant to wear.
The spinning mill: The yarn comes from the Hinchliffe & Sons spinning mill, a traditional family-run company founded in 1776 in Yorkshire. They are world-renowned for the quality, fineness, and consistency of their yarns, particularly cashmere and Shetland wool.
History of the "shaggy" sweater: As early as the 9th century, Norse settlers introduced their sheep to the Shetland Islands. The traditional Shetland sweater was born out of necessity: it was knitted by the women of the archipelago to be warm, light, and extremely durable against the subarctic climate. Shetland wool is a robust fiber and can be coarse to the touch. The sweaters were often worn by fishermen.
But it was in the 1950s in the United States, not the United Kingdom, that the Shetland sweater acquired its famous brushed "shaggy" finish, as Americans sought the warmth of Shetland wool but with more softness.
The Shaggy sweater became a pillar of Preppy and Ivy League style in the United States, worn by icons like John F. Kennedy. This success made this finish the benchmark for Shetland wool worldwide.
Jamy’s bonus note: why are Shetland sheep and ponies small?
> The small size of Shetland sheep and ponies is the result of an evolutionary adaptation to the extremely harsh environment and limited resources of the Shetland Islands, a wind-swept archipelago north of Scotland. This phenomenon is an excellent example of island adaptation, where small size becomes an advantage for survival :)
