The name "Cray-Pas" is a contraction of "Crayon" and "Pastel," indicating that it combines the best of both: the ease of a crayon and the creamy texture of a pastel.
Cray-Pas was initially designed for children as part of a new Japanese educational art theory promoting free drawing and creativity, a concept considered revolutionary at the time.
They are generally made in Japan; depending on the shipment, some products may be made in Vietnam.
