Yukio Yamai founded Snow Peak in 1958, named after Mount Tanigawa, a Japanese mountain famous for its beauty, but also for its danger and the many failures of mountaineers attempting to reach its glorious summit.
Drawing on his personal experiences (he reached the summit himself several times), he created innovative mountaineering equipment, utilizing the expertise of renowned Sanjo metalworkers (the city where our tools and some Niwaki knives are produced).
In the 70s, his son Tohru decided to expand the brand's offering to include camping and the outdoor lifestyle.
His feelings of frustration and disconnection while in the city would vanish when spending time in nature, a form of healing that was both restorative and revitalizing.
Today, Snow Peak’s mission remains the same: to offer and create restorative outdoor experiences that alleviate the stresses of modern life and help people reconnect to the rhythms of the natural world.
