To extend their exceptional lifespan, our tools are pre-treated by Seth: metal parts are coated with a transparent matte varnish, and the wooden handles are waxed.
These protective layers will help prevent damage caused by rust and moisture.
To take care of your great tools, here are a few simple steps to follow:
- After use, wipe them down with a cloth and, if possible, store them in a dry place.
- Protect the steel with our Niwaki camellia oil or another protective oil to prevent rust.
- Clean dirt and rust off the steel with our Niwaki Crean Mate rust eraser.
- Oil or wax the handle from time to time.
- For tools with a sharpened edge, sharpen them regularly using our Smith's sharpening stone or a tool file.
Red Pig is a family-owned forge. It creates the highest quality, traditional garden tools, the old-fashioned way, by hand:
« We use steel, fire, anvil, and good, honest sweat »
These handcrafted tools are stronger, sharper, and will last longer than any others you will find on the market.
They have been made since 1989 by Seth Pauley and his team in Oregon, USA.

He first taught creative writing and literature at Temple University in Philadelphia; he is the co-founder of a literary journal; he has written and edited for various publications related to arts and culture; and he has spent many years supporting small American family manufacturers of high-quality products.
Now, he is putting all these skills acquired over the years to use by focusing on making Red Pig tools.
