The Hishika gardening saw (240 mm) is designed specifically for pruning, tree trimming, and working with green wood.

Its fixed blade and robust assembly make it a particularly durable tool for intensive work in the garden or for bushcraft. It is equipped with an Ibara-me ("brier-tooth") slanted tooth pattern to slice through fibers effortlessly, even in damp or complex woods. The handle and sheath are made of beech wood; the blade is secured by brass screws, ensuring excellent longevity.

Compared to a Western saw, the blade is very thin, which makes the cut much cleaner, more precise, and faster. It allows for healthier healing of trees after pruning. However, this thinness requires careful handling:

  • The technique: Adopt a gentle sawing motion. The cut occurs only on the pull stroke; simply guide the movement during the push.

  • Never twist the blade while sawing and ensure the weight of the branch does not pinch it.

  • Maintenance: After use, clean the blade to remove sap and store it in its wooden sheath to protect it from moisture.

  • Type: Pruning saw, green wood, Bushcraft.

  • Blade length: 240 mm

  • Total length: 395 mm

  • Blade thickness: 0.7 mm (approx.)

  • Steel: High-quality Japanese carbon steel.

  • Handle & Sheath: Beech (sheath can be attached to a belt).

  • Manufacturing: Semi-artisanal (Miki, Japan).

The Workshop: HISHIKA (Miki, Japan)

Established for over 120 years in Miki, the historical cradle of Japanese edge tool manufacturing, the Hishika firm is one of the last bastions of high-quality saws. Its reputation rests on a rare balance: the use of cutting-edge technology for tooth hardness, combined with ancestral manual finishing for the flatness of the blade.

Exclusive OUTINOMI x MAGASIN VIVANT! collaboration:

Together with Outinomi, we select the best of Japanese craftsmanship and utilitarian design—tools that are as simple as they are intuitive to use for all basic tasks, while ensuring strictly professional quality.

This young company was founded in 2024 by Lucas Hoffalt, a "designer-artisan" who graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. Outinomi acts as a bridge between the last great Japanese blacksmiths and Western craftspeople.

Lucas offers tools that have a soul, often sourced from small traditional forges. His approach is distinguished by an extremely selective curation, ranging from new tools to rare "vintage" pieces (Showa era) that he refurbishes himself, sourced for their exceptional forging quality. He values Japanese carbon steel, which he considers vastly superior to modern mass production.

For Lucas, the tool is not only perceived as a utilitarian object but as a functional piece of design endowed with its own aesthetics, texture, and poetry. It is this quest for beauty and excellence that naturally led him to Japanese craftsmanship, one of the most demanding in the world.
