Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro is one of the most influential figures in 19th-century Portuguese culture, known for his humorous drawings, caricatures, and ceramics.

An artist who depicted a troubling reality of Portuguese life, his work is fundamental to understanding the political, social, cultural, and ideological world of his time.

His remarkable work in ceramics was awarded the gold medal at numerous international exhibitions (Madrid, Antwerp, Paris, and St. Louis, USA).

The Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro Museum in Lisbon is dedicated to his life and work.

On June 30, 1884, to perpetuate the memory of their father, a ceramic craftsman, Raphael and his brother Feliciano founded La Fábrica de Faianças das Caldas.

In Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro's factory, hundreds of ceramic models of unparalleled creativity were created, based on local traditions, particularly Caldas pottery, adopting fauna and flora as the main decorative inspiration.

Bordallo also modeled characters based on Portuguese daily life with a remarkable critical sense, and in his tiles, he created designs with diverse influences, from the Renaissance, naturalism, and Art Nouveau to the Spanish and Arab heritage.

Today, Bordallo Pinheiro plays an essential role in the revitalization of Portuguese ceramics and the artistic heritage of his factory, Fábrica de Faianças Artísticas.
Bordallo Pinheiro remains faithful to Portuguese tradition through the use of ancestral manufacturing techniques and the naturalist motifs at the origin of the brand's great project.
The brand's utilitarian and decorative pieces continue to fuel our collective imagination and to share Portuguese culture and craftsmanship with the world.
