Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro is one of the most influential figures in 19th-century Portuguese culture, known for his humorous drawings, caricatures, and ceramics.
An artist representing the unsettling reality of Portuguese life, his work is fundamental to understanding the political, social, cultural, and ideological world of his time.
His remarkable ceramic work was awarded the gold medal at numerous international exhibitions (Madrid, Antwerp, Paris, and St. Louis, USA).
The Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro Museum in Lisbon is dedicated to his life and work.
On June 30, 1884, to perpetuate the memory of their father, a ceramic artisan, Raphael and his brother Feliciano founded La Fábrica de Faianças das Caldas.
In Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro's factory, hundreds of ceramic models of unparalleled creativity were created, based on local traditions, particularly Caldas pottery, adopting flora and fauna as their primary decorative inspiration.
Bordallo also modeled figures based on Portuguese daily life with a remarkable sense of critique, and in his tiles, he created patterns with diverse influences, such as the Renaissance, Naturalism, Art Nouveau, as well as Spanish and Arabic heritage.
Today, Bordallo Pinheiro plays an essential role in the revitalization of Portuguese ceramics and the artistic heritage of its factory, Fábrica de Faianças Artísticas.
Bordallo Pinheiro remains faithful to the Portuguese tradition through the use of ancestral manufacturing techniques and the naturalist motifs at the heart of the brand's great project.
The brand's functional and decorative pieces continue to fuel our collective imagination and to promote Portuguese culture and craftsmanship throughout the world.
