Yukio Yamai founded Snow Peak in 1958, named after Mount Tanigawa, a Japanese mountain famous for its beauty, but also for its danger and the many failures of mountaineers attempting to reach its glorious summit.
Drawing on his personal experiences (he reached the summit himself several times), he created innovative mountaineering equipment, utilizing the expertise of renowned metalworkers in Sanjo (the city where our tools and some Niwaki knives are produced).
In the 1970s, his son Tohru decided to expand the brand's offering to camping and the outdoor lifestyle.
His feelings of frustration and disconnection while in the city would disappear when spending time in nature—a sort of healing, restorative, and revitalizing experience.
Today, Snow Peak’s mission remains the same: to offer and create restorative outdoor experiences that alleviate the stresses of modern life and reconnect us to the rhythms of the natural world.
