Yukio Yamai founded Snow Peak in 1958, named after Mount Tanigawa, a Japanese mountain famous for its beauty, but also for its danger and the many failed attempts by mountaineers to reach its glorious summit.
Drawing on his personal experiences (he reached the summit several times himself), he created innovative mountaineering equipment using the expertise of renowned Sanjo metalworkers (the city where our tools and some Niwaki knives are produced).
In the 1970s, his son Tohru decided to expand the range to include camping and the outdoor lifestyle.
His feelings of frustration and disconnection while in the city would vanish when spending time in nature—a form of healing, both restorative and revitalizing.
Today, Snow Peak’s mission remains the same: to offer and create restorative outdoor experiences to alleviate the stress of modern life and reconnect with the rhythms of the natural world.
